The route has changed a little over the past few weeks, and I’m sure it will continue to change. If anyone lives near my anticipated route and wants to say hi, let me know, email me early on with your phone #. I’m probably going to have to take 1 or 2 days more than is listed here, especially if weather slows me down, but here’s my plan so far:
Day 1 – July 21: Leave Dallas, TX for Apalachicola National Forest, FL. Approx 14 hours
Day 2 – July 22: Apalachicola National Forest, FL to Key West, FL. This will complete my Iron Butt Association Bunburner 1500. Approx 12 hours.
Day 3 – July 23: Key West, FL back to Apalachicola National Forest, FL. Approx 12 hours.
Day 4 – July 24: Apalachicola National Forest, FL to Dallas, TX – Approx 14 hours.
Day 5 - July 25: Take a day off in Dallas, TX. Go to the TOOL concert.
Day 6 – July 26: Dallas, TX to Lubbock, TX for lunch, spend the day in Lubbock, in the evening continue on to Clayton, NM. Approx 7 hours total.
Day 7 – July 27: Clayton, NM to the summit of Pikes Peak, then back down and continue on to a friend’s cabin in Cedaredge, CO. Approx 11 hours total.
Day 8 – July 28: Spend most of the day at the cabin, in the later afternoon, head from Cedaredge, CO to Arches National Park, UT. Approx 3 hours.
Day 9 – July 29: Check out Arches National Park, UT, then head up to Salt Lake City, UT as close to Grand Teton National Park, WY as possible. Approx 11 hours.
Day 10 – July 30: Check out Grand Teton National Park, WY, continue on to Yellowstone National Park, WY. See the sights. Approx 2 hours.
Day 11 – July 31: Yellowstone National Park, WY to Glacier National Park, MT. Approx 9 hours.
Day 12 – August 1: Glacier National Park, MT across the Canadian border to Banff National Park, BC. Approx 6 hours.
Day 13 – August 2: Banff National Park, BC to Jasper National Park, BC. Continue on to Fort Nelson, BC. Approx 11 hours.
Day 14 – August 3: Fort Nelson, BC to Whitehorse, YT. Approx 8 hours.
Day 15 – August 4: Whitehorse, YT across US border to Tok, AK. Approx 8 hours.
Day 16 – August 5: Tok, AK to Fairbanks, AK. Get a hotel, do full bike inspection, prepare for the cold, difficult, gravel Dalton Hwy. Approx 4 hours.
Day 17 – August 6: Fairbanks, AK to the Dalton Hwy. Since the road is in questionable shape, just get as far as possible down the road.
Day 18 – August 7: Dalton Hwy to Deadhorse, AK. See the “sights” and head back towards Fairbanks on the Dalton Hwy.
Day 19 – August 8: Dalton Hwy to Fairbanks. Find a hotel. Find a UPS store and ship all my gear back. Make the bike look pretty, sell it to a dealer. Find airplane ticket.
Day 20 – August 9: Fly home.
Total - Approx 9,000 miles.
