Iron Steed

Aka – the bike.

After some research and a lot of internal debating, I’ve decided to leave my trusted Buell XB12R Firebolt at home. Apparently the last few hundred miles to Deadhorse are on a gravel road that would not be very sportbike friendly. Plus, I may want to leave the bike in Alaska and sell it rather than ship it back. So after consulting my local Craigslist, I was able to find a good deal on a 2005 Kawasaki KLR650. I’ve never had anything resembling a dirt bike before, so this is definitely an experience. I’ve spent the last several days tightening bolts and giving it a thorough checkup.

The bike is mostly stock, but here’s what I’ve added on:

  • Two additional high beam headlights
  • Front fork spacers for added preload
  • Cruise control
  • 12V aux power (cigarette lighter)
  • Compass, clock, thermometer
  • Continental TrailAttack tires
  • Handlebar brush guards
  • Rear trunk
  • Cortech Sport Saddle Bags
  • KLR650.com Tank Bag
